WAYNESBORO – In her senior year, Karen Bowie wants to help bring modest clothing back into style at Waynesboro Area Senior High School.
The 17-year-old straight-A student was one of 40 girls in the country chosen to attend a fashion workshop this summer sponsored by Beautifully Modest, a company based in Provo, Utah, that designs and sells modest gowns for women.
In addition to modeling for the company’s new catalog, Bowie will put together two local fashion shows – one before homecoming and one before the senior prom – to promote its new line of dresses.
“I’m trying to spread the word that girls don’t need to show off their bodies to look good. They can be modest and still be beautiful,” Bowie said.
Religion’s role
Modesty has always been an important value for Bowie, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Bowie’s religion suggests that people should respect their bodies by not wearing revealing clothing, and Bowie said her parents, David and Camille, raised her to follow those guidelines.
